The best way to care and store your Jewellery

If you’ve ever bought a brand new car, odds are you will get it cleaned fairy regularly, keep it parked in a garage when possible, and look after it to the best of your ability. This will usually be the case for several years, before eventually the dings and dints from visiting the shops takes its toll and the car may begin to lose a bit of its lustre. The reason you care so much is essentially because nobody really likes the feeling of pouring money down the drain, and it’s protecting your own investment to look after the asset.

The main reason it’s worth taking care of expensive items is because over time, the value of many of these items can appreciate quite well, especially so, if they are in new or near new condition. So for example you could you be look to sell them at a Jewellery Auction and the better the condition the more likely you will be able to maximise your return.

The same thought can be applied to any other valuable asset, and the more components or moving parts the asset has the more attention to keep it looking great will be needed. Assets such as houses will always require a lot of constant attention, but smaller items such as collectible sports cards, watches, and jewellery are usually much easier to maintain.

It’s worth noting the more you handle or use any of these items the more chance they can get dirty or even worse become damaged, so particularly if the items are for investment purposes it’s always worth looking to protect your assets as best as possible through some of the means below.

Jewellery Box

Depending on the amount of jewellery that you own and the value of the pieces, it’s always worth having a nice felt lined jewellery box to store the items that you regularly wear. There are some boxes on the market which are modular and have the ability to grow along with your collection.

Personal Safe

You don’t necessarily need to hide it behind a painting like in the movies, but a personal safe is a great place to store those expensive irreplaceable items of Jewellery. You can also store important documents such as deeds to your property or your passports, as most safes are designed to be fire proof. The only other important factors to consider is if it’s hidden that it can’t easily be removed from your property, and how are you going to remember the combination, otherwise look for a safe that uses a different mechanism such as biometric locking!

Bank Safe

This is not something that is offered at every bank, but many of the long standing upmarket branches still offer a personal security box service, for an ongoing fee. While this is the most secure option, the ongoing fees will add up over time, so unless your items are of immense value, this is probably not viable for most people

Keeping things clean

Keeping your Jewellery nice and clean will ensure your diamonds continue to sparkle and your other items don’t get bent, scratched, dented or broken. When items of jewellery sit against your skin they collect make-up, dirt, sweat and even micro particles of skin. One of the best ways to clean your jewellery, particularly diamonds, is in an ultrasonic cleaner. This is a small device that provides micro oscillations in a small bath of water, which eventually jiggle loose any dirt build up, a bit like a tiny gentle version of a washing machine. Bare in mind these machines don’t work for everything, and can actually eventually damage some precious items such as pearl, so read the instructions carefully, and do some research on your specific items that you wish to clean. Otherwise some warm water and a soft toothbrush is likely to be your best option.

Precious items such a Jewellery are there to bring joy to the people wearing them, allowing you to express yourself in different ways, either by showing off an heirloom, co-ordinating with an outfit, or just making you feel a little bit fancy. If you care for your items well enough you may even be in a position to continue or create a legacy of your own and pass them down through generations of your family to come.
